Description

A Fine 19th Century Japanese Katana in Intricately Carved Narrative Bone Mountings. This exceptional 19th-century Japanese katana exemplifies the virtuosic bone-carving traditions prevalent during the late Edo to early Meiji periods, featuring a curved steel blade housed within an elaborately decorated bone saya (scabbard) and tsuka (hilt). The entire surface of the bone mountings is meticulously rendered in high relief, utilizing fine incised lines and dark pigment to depict complex narrative vignettes populated by samurai in traditional armor and various figures set against lush landscapes and architectural backgrounds. The craftsmanship extends to the bone tsuba (guard), which maintains a unified aesthetic throughout the assembly, while the steel blade displays a standard single-edged profile and traditional curvature. These highly decorative swords were often produced for ceremonial display or for the sophisticated export market of the 19th century, serving as a testament to Japanese artistic ingenuity during a period of significant cultural transition. The overall length of the sword, measured from the pommel to the tip of the scabbard, is approximately 75 cm. The item is in good condition.
