Description

A Extra Rare Belgian Multi-Shot Gravity-Fed "Rocket Ball" Pistol by Victor Colette, Liège, circa 1855. This exceptionally rare 11.7 mm caliber gravity-fed pistol, manufactured in the mid-1850s by the esteemed Belgian gunsmith Victor Colette of Liège, stands as a significant milestone in 19th-century experimental ballistics. Engineered to utilize Gaupillat’s innovative caseless “rocket ball” ammunition—where the hollow lead projectile contains the propellant and primer—the firearm features a distinctive tubular magazine positioned above the octagonal faceted barrel. The mechanical system employs gravity-based feeding, activated by cocking the hammer while elevating the muzzle to allow a single round to descend into the breech block from the partially open magazine tube, which allows the user to monitor the load capacity (in different calibers the capacity of the tubular magazine reached up to 18 rounds). The steel frame and side plates exhibit fine foliate scroll engraving, complementing the polished walnut grip that is deeply fluted and secured with a chased steel butt cap. Significant markings include the inscription "TL VC 1902" on the lower barrel flat. Measuring approximately 39 centimeters in total length, this repeating pistol represents an evolution of Belgian mechanical art. The item is in good condition.
