This exceptional European ceremonial dagger is a spectacular masterwork, seamlessly uniting a historic 16th-century Renaissance blade with a luxurious 18th-century silver hilt and scabbard ensemble. The straight, single-edged steel blade was meticulously crafted by the legendary Milanese master bladesmith Antonio Picinino probably 1537-1545. His work is highly coveted for its superior forge-work and refined geometry. The face of the blade displays a finely acid-etched and engraved heraldic achievement showing the coat of arms and accompanying Latin motto of the illustrious Italian princely House of Farnese, signifying its esteemed noble commission. The dagger's magnificent mounts and matching scabbard are expertly wrought from silver, decorated in high relief with exquisite Baroque motifs, intricate scrolling foliage, and delicate architectural mouldings that provide a striking textural depth. Sourced from the prestigious private collection of the French arms and armor expert Philippe Missillier, this rare historical treasure measures approximately 63 cm in total length and exhibits a wonderful, untouched patina.
