Description

A Caucasian Dagger "KAMA" with scabbard, Silver and Niello, Russian Empire, Probably Dagestan, 19th C. This fine 19th-century Caucasian kama represents the sophisticated metalwork of the Russian Imperial era, featuring a double-edged steel blade with a characteristically offset fuller and a tapering point. The hilt is carved from polished dark horn and secured by silver rivets with decorative floral bosses. The scabbard is bound in black leather and adorned with an ornate silver fittings, both of which are extensively decorated with traditional niello foliate scrolls, geometric borders, and stippled motifs, reflecting the high-status craftsmanship of regional workshops. This technique, involving the application of a dark metallic alloy into engraved silver surfaces, creates the high-contrast aesthetic synonymous with Caucasian prestige weaponry. On the reverse side of the fittings there is a very high quality inscription in Arabic. Dimension approximately 64 cm in total length, the dagger serves as a significant artifact of the cultural and military history of the Caucasus and Russian Empire. The item is in good condition.
