Description

A Cased Eli Whitney Percussion Revolver, 1860s, Connecticut, USA. An exceptional cased example of an American percussion revolver, manufactured by Eli Whitney's armory in Connecticut, dating to the mid-19th century. The five-shot, 7.4 mm. caliber revolver features a blued octagonal barrel, a plain un-fluted cylinder, and a subtly case-hardened frame, elegantly complemented by a trigger guard and smooth, contoured walnut grips. The top flat of the barrel is distinctly stamped with the maker's mark "E. WHITNEY / NEW HAVEN" in crisp lettering. Measuring approximately 30 centimeters in overall length, the weapon is housed in a finely crafted wooden presentation case, likely rosewood, distinguished by decorative border inlay and a central intricately engraved brass escutcheon on the lid. The green baize-lined and compartmentalized interior retains a comprehensive suite of matching period accessories, including a classic copper powder flask, a iron bullet mold and screwdriver, a cleaning rod, cast lead balls, and an original japanned tin of percussion caps manufactured by Eley Brothers of London. The oak case measures approximately 30 x 22 x 5 cm. The item is in good condition.
