Description

A Brazilian Model 1908 Mauser Bayonet with Original Scabbard. This Brazilian Model 1908 Mauser bayonet represents the refined military cutlery produced under German contract for the Brazilian armed forces during the early 20th century. The specimen is characterized by its straight, single-edged steel blade, which incorporates a deep longitudinal fuller to enhance structural rigidity while maintaining a light profile. The hilt is expertly fitted with contoured walnut wood grip scales, fastened by two steel rivets, and is completed by a polished steel bird's-head pommel featuring a functional locking slot. A distinctive feature of this model is the crossguard, which boasts a muzzle ring and an elegant, recurved hooked quillon. The artifact is marked with the stamped serial number "13479" on the crossguard and additional numerical identifiers on the pommel. The accompanying scabbard is crafted from dark leather with steel mountings at the throat and chape, the former bearing a frog stud stamped with the "FI" factory monogram within an oval, indicating later association with the Fábrica de Itajubá. Monograms like "FI" were stamped as property, acceptance, or refurbishment marks on equipment and firearms used by military personnel. Common OccurrencesYou will most frequently encounter this mark on: Military Bayonets: Stamped on crossguards, pommels, or suspension knobs (indicating Brazilian service or refurbishment of foreign-supplied weapons). Measuring approximately 45 centimeters in total length, this bayonet remains a significant example of international arms procurement and early modern infantry equipment. The item is in good condition.
