Description

A 19th Century Southern Chinese Military Bamboo and Rattan Helmet. This 19th-century Southern Chinese military helmet represents the quintessential archetype of Southern-style headgear utilized by soldiers and militiamen during the late Qing Dynasty. Constructed as a conical structure with slightly convex sides, the helmet is expertly fashioned from strips of bamboo held together by sturdy rattan bindings. The exterior surface is punctuated by bold calligraphic inscriptions in black pigment, while the lower rim is accented with a decorative red polychrome finish. The apex features a decorative woven rattan pattern in contrasting pigments, providing a striking detail to the structural center. Internally, the helmet is lined with a complex, tightly interlaced rattan basket weave, characteristic of the period’s artisanal techniques to ensure both durability and wearer comfort. Measuring approximately 28 cm in diameter. A significant example of Chinese military material culture. The item is in good condition.
