Description
A 19th Century Sapper Saber with Engraved Brass Hilt Depicting Zoomorphic Motifs, France, 19th century. This antique sapper saber, probably dating from the second half of the 19th century, represents a sophisticated nineteenth-century interpretation of the commemorating Imperial Guard blades from the early Napoleonic era. The hilt is masterfully crafted from polished brass, featuring a hilt assembly that showcases exceptional hand-engraved artistry. The pommel is rendered in the form of a cock with an open beak, detailed with chiseled plumage, while the cross-guard terminates in stylized lioness heads. At the center of the cross-guard, both sides of the langet are adorned with the expressive face of a maned lion. The long, slender steel blade possesses a patina consistent with its age. The weapon is housed in its original metal scabbard. The total length of the sword and scabbard measures approximately 99 cm. The item is in good condition.
