Description
A 19th-Century Italian Silver-Mounted Walking Cane, depicting Pope Clement XII. Possibly a pilgrim's cane to the Vatican. This 18th-century Italian walking cane features a silver knob handle inset with a detailed numismatic medallion depicting Pope Clement XII in profile. The medallion is circumscribed with the inscription "CLEMENS XII P.M. A. VIII," corresponding to the eighth year of his pontificate and providing a precise attribution to circa 1738. The handle is expertly fashioned from silver with a polished collar. Cane mounted upon a slender hardwood shaft, which displays a rich, aged grain and a smooth finish. Standing approximately 88 cm in length and fitted with a metal ferrule, the cane is a rare survival of ecclesiastical-themed personal finery from the 19th-Century. The item is in good condition.
